The state of Illinois is celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2018.  But at Lincoln’s New Salem, an important 100th anniversary is being celebrated as well.  That’s because 2018 will mark the 100 years since the first organized live performance was staged at the site!  Local folks, trying to raise awareness of how important New Salem was in Lincoln’s life organized an impressive “pageant” which included scenes from Lincoln’s life at New Salem as its centerpiece.  As a result of their efforts, the state made New Salem a state park the following year.

A “re-creation” of that pageant is being planned for the upcoming season.  While the organizers promise that it will not run the same four-hours that the original performance did, they assure everyone that it will be true to the spirit of that event and therefore will definitely be worth seeing.

Although Theatre in the Park is not involved with the Bicentennial Pageant, they will be offering other live performances for the 2018 season.  It’s not too early to start planning your summer!  For more info and to purchase tickets for Theatre in the Park’s performances, please visit their website.

The New Salem Lincoln League is a proud sponsor of Theatre in the Park!
